Farm finance built around how agriculture actually works

Agricultural income doesn’t arrive in neat monthly instalments. It comes in with the season — a strong grain harvest, a good cattle price, a run of contract work. The years between can look lean on paper even when the operation is healthy and productive. Banks don’t always understand this, and their documentation requirements often don’t reflect the reality of running a farming business.

CarFund understands agricultural borrowers. We’re a specialist self-employed finance broker and we’ve been arranging equipment finance for farmers, graziers, and agribusiness operators across Australia for over 20 years. For farm equipment up to $500,000, we don’t require tax returns. We work with lenders who assess agricultural finance on the merits of the operation — not just the last two years of returns.

Seasonal repayment structures for farmers

Standard monthly repayments don’t suit every agricultural operation. We can discuss seasonal repayment options — where larger repayments align with harvest or selling periods — for operations with clearly seasonal income patterns. Ask about this when you get your quote.

The right finance product for farm equipment

Chattel mortgage
The machine or vehicle is owned by you from settlement. If GST-registered, you claim the GST on the full purchase price at your next BAS — immediately. Interest is tax deductible. Depreciation is claimable. Balloon payment available. Best suited to equipment you intend to keep.

Finance lease
The lender owns the equipment during the term; you take ownership at the end. Payments are fully deductible as business expenses. Can suit operators who upgrade equipment frequently or who prefer the off-balance-sheet treatment.

Your accountant confirms which structure is most appropriate for your tax position. CarFund briefs you on both options during the quote so you can have that conversation fully informed.

Why farmers choose CarFund

No tax returns for equipment up to $500,000
Our standard offering. We know that farm financials can be complex and that recent returns don’t always reflect the true state of a going concern. We work with lenders who assess agricultural operations on a broader basis.

We work with all farm types and sizes
Broadacre cropping, mixed farming, grazing and beef production, horticulture, viticulture, intensive agriculture, and everything in between. We don’t have a minimum farm size or minimum turnover threshold.

Clearing sales and private purchases
Buying at a clearing sale or from a neighbour means you need to move quickly. CarFund’s pre-approval gives you a confirmed limit so you can bid with confidence.

Finance for older and used machinery
Good used equipment is the backbone of many farming operations. We finance used machinery — headers, tractors, and other equipment — without the automatic exclusions that apply at some lenders. The machine is assessed on its condition and value.

Lender relationships built for commercial finance
We work with Macquarie Bank, Capital Finance, and other specialist commercial lenders whose products are designed for self-employed and agricultural borrowers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get farm equipment finance if I have a bad season behind me?
Possibly. A difficult recent year doesn’t automatically exclude you, particularly when the longer history of the operation is strong or asset backing is solid. Speak to us directly and we’ll give you an honest answer.

Can I finance machinery purchased at a clearing sale?
Yes — provided it hasn’t already settled (i.e. ownership hasn’t transferred yet). Pre-approval before the sale puts you in the best position. If you’ve already agreed to purchase, contact us immediately — we move fast.

Can I get pre-approved before I find the equipment?
Yes. Pre-approval is valid for 90 days and gives you a confirmed borrowing limit. Particularly useful before a clearing sale, auction, or when you’re watching the market for the right machine to come up.

Do I need a deposit?
Property-owning farmers typically don’t need a deposit. The land you own is a significant asset that supports your application. Non-property owners are assessed case by case.

Can a farming company or trust apply?
Yes. We arrange finance in company and trust names as well as personally. The right structure depends on how your farming business is set up.

Does getting a quote affect my credit score?
No — zero credit impact at the quote stage.
