Mazda CX-5 2019 Review

By December 2, 2018

The Mazda CX-5 2019 receives numerous meaningful updates which include a newly introduced top-of-the-line model, as well as a first-ever introduced turbocharged engine. Perhaps, we are more excited about the turbocharged engine as we’ve in the past lamented the company to having limited choices in the powertrain department. This time around, buyers have the option of getting the optional 250-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The turbo engine is paired with Mazda’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system which is currently only available for the two top-end models.

The CX-5 2019 includes the company’s Signature model that offers a host of features like chrome and wood accents on the inside, ambient lighting, leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera and numerous other bits of exterior polish that’s missing from the other models. Also, worth noting is the revised suspension and the steering system that uses the latest G-vectoring Control Plus system. Plus, we welcome the support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the CX-5’s entertainment system.

Engine Performance and Towing Power

One of the first things you’ll notice behind the wheel of the Mazda CX-5 2019 is the fact that it handles far better than previous generations. The handling is super responsive even at low speeds and the transmission shifts quickly.

The throttle response is amongst the best we’ve seen when pulling away from a dead stop. The vehicle’s peppy response makes it fun to drive. Perhaps the only drawback of the non-turbocharged engine variants is that you’ll not be able to pass by other similar vehicles. Though for most people the 187-hp four-cylinder engine should provide more than enough power. However, it does not beat the 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds. Not to mention the fact that the turbo variant comes paired with an even better six-speed auto shifter.

During our time with the 2019 CX-5, we noticed that the car does not need to be pushed hard to enjoy. Its excellent handling and great cornering make it an excellent vehicle to drive on a Sunday. We love the fact that the suspension soaks up most road imperfections, offering a smooth and quiet ride in return. If anything, we’ll compare it to some of the best crossovers costing twice as much.

The minimal road noise is one of the reasons the drive has a more luxurious feeling, even though it is by no means a luxury vehicle. Also, the electrically assisted steering control system offers a much more polished steering experience. We drove the Signature model boasting of excellent, responsive braking, which kicked in without a second’s delay. At the end of the day if it is driving pleasure you’re looking for the CX-5 should make it to most people’s short list.

Fuel Economy

The CX-5 has an EPA rating of 32 mpg for the non-turbocharged, all-wheel-drive model, which matches up precisely with the Honda CR-V. The front drive only non-turbo version offers a 1mpg boost. The more powerful turbocharged engine with all-wheel drive delivers 30 mpg on average. If anything, these are pretty decent numbers for a vehicle in this class.

Interior and Cargo Space

The Mazda CX-5 2019 manages to pull off what we’ve always maintained is a delicate balance between providing a luxury feel while keeping costs down by lowering the quality of stuff that does not matter as much. If you were to be blindfolded and put inside of the CX-5, you’d think it is a Mercedes or perhaps a high-end Audi. Mazda has undoubtedly not skimped on material quality, using some of the best we’ve seen even in rivaling luxury models costing way more than the CX-5.

Even things like the accelerator pedal feel luxurious and comfortable to use. The steering wheel is well crafted, grippy, and is perfectly positioned so that you can easily take it for a long drive without needing a massage a few hundred miles later. Comfort is further reinforced with the front seat armrests which for most people is perfectly positioned but isn’t adjustable.

The infotainment system consists of a 7.0-inch touchscreen which appears to be mounted on the dashboard as though it was a tablet floating on air. The rotary controls between the front seats are pretty intuitive. The only drawback – and yes, we are nitpicking here – is that the screen is relatively small and the menu design is old. Though we welcome the addition of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Move on over to the trunk and space is limited yet still decent. It was able to accommodate nine carry-on bags. More space can be made by folding down the rear seats. The 2019’s biggest perk when it comes to storage space is that it is more functional, which in addition to the trunk includes various nooks and crannies for everything from a smartphone to cigarette lighters and extra cups.

Safety Features

The National Highway Transportation Administration gave the CX-5 a five-star rating. Also, available with the Mazda CX-5 2019 model is the company’s drive assist system along with, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, low-speed emergency braking and stop & go technology.

Final Verdict

The Mazda CX-5 2019 should be on the short list of anyone looking for a compact SUV, especially for people who want an SUV that’s zippy and sporty. Mazda has put the competition on notice by upping the ante on the CX-5’s performance with a turbocharged option which delivers even more power. We were also impressed by the interior styling and comfortable seating capacity. The CX-5 is clearly going head to head with other more established players like the Honda CR-V and the Subaru Forester. In our opinion, 2019 could be the year when the CX-5 establishes itself as being amongst the best in the compact SUV category.
